Iceland!

Just gonna post a bunch of photos. We’re already halfway through the Iceland trip! We started in the southwest and moved clockwise through the western region. I’ll try to post each major region.

Reykjavik is very LQBTQ friendly. Loved it
Mega modern church
Love that they have furniture in there!
Still Reykjavik at the shore. Our place was in the pedestrian zone but we walked a lot on our one evening there

We drove the famous ring road in 6 days —really the minimum one could try to do it. We did (so far) 4-8 hours driving per day which isn’t a lot for us. Well actually, Luca has done all the driving so far! But we’re used to a lot of long drives.

Bogarnes
Still bogarnes. An area that shows a variety of Iceland from towns to water to churches to thatch roof houses!

We covered a LOT of ground the first day!!! We did the ring road clockwise (from Reykjavik in the southwest along the west side to the northwest side)

It was a bit windy and pretty chilly at Kirkjufellfoss where we had to pay an outrageous $12 to park to see this mediocre waterfall

We took a deviation from the ring road to go to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula including the photo above and many below.

We did most lunches on the road (food is really expensive in Iceland and also we liked to cover a lot of ground by basically only having dinner out)
They call the western area “Iceland in miniature” because there are glaciers and lava rocks, as well as the sea and mountains, though we didn’t do all that!!! But it’s still pretty amazing
Near Grabrok, a major crater off the ring road
Walking to the crater
From the crater
Saudarkrokur — midpoint stop (and area where we had dinner)

We slept in Varmahlid, an area famous for raising Icelandic horses. We actually stayed that night at a horse farm!

Sadly Glaumbaer, an open air folk museum, was closed the day we hoped to visit since May 1 is a holiday (labor day) but we saw the thatch covered houses (we also saw other people going there without paying as it was closed but we didn’t want to do that) and took photos from the parking area
We took all these from the Airbnb where we stayed in Varmahlid. The fact that the sun doesn’t set until after 10 is pretty amazing. We didn’t check in until after a (very good) dinner and walked on the farm to take pictures of the horses

I’m several days late with all this but seriously we drove the most the first day after arriving in Reykjavik. Will try to catch up more later!
